SAC Invitational; Great Oak sweeps sweepstakes titles despite not being at full strength Davis Senior's Fiona O'Keeffe and Palisades' Marissa Williams wins girls sweepstakes races, both moving into all-time top 10; Los Gatos' Chris Foster triumphs in boys team sweepstakes race By Erik Boal, DyeStatCAL Editor SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS, MORE TO COME SUNDAY Brea-Olinda junior Austin Tamagno set the 2.93-mile course record by clocking 14 minutes, 23.19 seconds Saturday at the 67th Mt. SAC Invitiational to win the individual sweepstakes title, eclipsing the standard of 14:24 shared by West Covina’s Diego Mercado in 2005 and Arcadia’s Ammar Moussa in 2010. Four runners in the boys individual sweepstakes race break 14:40, including Arcadia’s Phillip Rocha (14:31.7), Big Bear’s Caleb Webb (14:34.3) and Loyola’s Robert Brandt (14:39.3), who helped the Cubs prevail in the team battle with 122 points, just ahead of Dana Hills (135) and Arcadia (136). Davis Senior’s Fiona O’Keeffe runs 16:28.5 to win the girls team sweepstakes race, but her rematch with Great Oak’s Destiny Collins didn’t materialize, as Collins was slowed by a left foot injury and finished 45th in 18:58.7. Great Oak still had plenty in reserve, winning Division 1 girls sweepstakes for sixth consecutive by defeating Division 2 program Capistrano Valley 38-127. Emily Clause (17:34.5) and Kiyena Beatty (17:37.3) were second and third for Great Oak, which ran 89:30. Behind a second-place finish from Nick Doan (14:51.6) and Isaac Cortes taking fourth (15:03.5), Great Oak captured its first Division 1 boys sweepstakes title by defeating Jurupa Hills 84-109, with Agoura – moving up from Division 3 – taking third with 121 points. It marked the first time since Dana Hills in 2008 that the same school secured both Division 1 boys and girls sweepstakes titles. Great Oak had the fastest time of the meet at 76:27, which ranks No. 9 all-time on the course. Los Gatos senior Chris Foster won the boys team sweepstakes race in 14:40.3. Palisades senior Marissa Williams won the girls individual sweepstakes in 16:39.3, with Burbank’s Candela Fernandez second in 17:13.2 and Redondo Union’s Amber Gore (17:33.2) taking third. Sonoma Academy freshman Rylee Bowen, the leading contender for the Division 5 state title, shined in the girls individual sweepstakes by placing fourth in 17:44.1. Vista Murrieta senior Ashley Cahalan won the Division 1 girls sub-sweepstakes in 17:54.6, helping her team secure a 76-91 victory over Amador Valley. Castro Valley’s Carter Mackey won the Division 1 boys sub-sweepstakes in 15:21.2, with Eric Nunez (15:30.4) leading Vista Murrieta to an 83-99 victory over El Toro. Citrus Valley’s Claire Graves produced the fourth-fastest time of the meet by winning her Division 2 varsity race in 17:20.7, contributing to a 37-74 victory over Clovis West. Great Oak secured the first six spots in the girls JV sweepstakes race, led by Evelyn Mandel in 18:07.4 to not only produce perfect score of 15, but set the Mt. SAC all-time JV record of 92:52. Great Oak’s bid to sweep both JV sweepstakes races for a third year in a row fell short, when the boys were knocked off 43-75 by Martin Luther King,
