68th Mt. SAC Invitational -- 10 Runners to Watch

By Erik Boal, DyeStatCAL Editor

Wyatt Baxter, Simi Valley, Sr.

His best time on the Mt. SAC course is 15:57 from last year’s Southern Section finals, but expect a significant improvement from Baxter in his Division 2 varsity race late Saturday. He has big victories at the Clovis Invitational and Fastback Shootout, in addition to a third-place finish in the seeded race at Woodbridge.

Rylee Bowen, Sonoma Academy, Soph.

She made a huge impact last year in her Mt. SAC debut with a fourth-place finish in the Division 1-2 individual sweepstakes race in 17:44.1, but this season Bowen will be racing in the Division 5 sweepstakes Friday against Central Valley Christian’s Gabby Satterlee, along with Flintridge Prep’s Sophie Gitlin and Natalie O’Brien.

Andrew Burkhardt, JSerra, Sr.

He is the top returning individual in the Division 4 sweepstakes after placing fifth in 15:37.7 last year. Burkhardt ran with the leaders for the first half of the Orange County Championships sweepstakes race, before finishing fifth. He’ll look to rebound Friday and improve on his personal-best 15:09 on the course.

Mason Coppi, Dana Hills, Sr.

He was eighth in the Division 1-2 individual sweepstakes race last year in 14:57.8, but the Dolphins are in the team sweepstakes this season and Coppi will be counted on heavily in determining their success, along with Jake Ogden and Jack Landgraf. He finished strong to place second behind Brea-Olinda’s Austin Tamagno at the Orange County Championships.

Claire Graves, Citrus Valley, Jr.

She ran 17:20.7 to win her Division 2 varsity race last year and lowered that time to 17:07 at the Southern Section finals to place second. This season, Graves will be in the Division 1-2 individual sweepstakes, so expect the increased competition to help her challenge the 17-minute barrier.

Luis Grijalva, Armijo, Jr.

One of the state’s most improved runners, Grijalva has won already at Bella Vista and the seeded race at Woodbridge and returns to Mt. SAC after running 18:51 as a freshman. He is entered in the Division 1-2 individual sweepstakes race and is among the favorites, along with Saugus’ Ryan Tate and Venice’s Paul Luevano.

Michelle Magnani, Moorpark, Sr.

She ran a personal-best 17:46.6 to take second in last year’s Division 3 sweepstakes and should be the favorite Friday. A potential showdown with Palos Verdes senior Jacquelyn Smith could develop if the Sea Kings run, but the Musketeers are also looking to challenge for the team title as well.

Tomas Miralles, La Jolla Country Day, Sr.

He is the third-fastest returning athlete in Division 5 behind Flintridge Prep’s Jack Van Scoter and St. Joseph Notre Dame’s Cooper Teare after finishing sixth last year in 15:47.2. Both Teare and Van Scoter have made significant improvements this season, so this will be a good opportunity for Miralles to measure his progress in a preview of their state meet showdown.

Allie Schadler, Rio Rico, Jr.

Along with her freshman sister Samantha Schadler, the Arizona star is making her Mt. SAC debut, albeit in a Division 4 varsity race Friday. Schadler was second at the Desert Twilight Festival in Arizona behind Air Academy (Colorado) standout Katie Rainsberger and has won at Four Corners and Desert Solstice. Schadler could produce one of the meet’s fastest times away from the spotlight of the sweepstakes races.

Mikayla Sodersten, Clovis, Sr.

She produced one of the top 10 times ever on the course by a freshman when she ran 17:22 in her Mt. SAC debut and is looking to conclude her career with another memorable performance. Sodersten, who won at the Golden West Invitational and placed third in the Clovis Invitational championship race, is among the favorites in the Division 1-2 individual sweepstakes race, along with Tesoro’s Amanda Gehrich, Citrus Valley’s Claire Graves and Monte Vista’s Brooke Starn.
