2014 HIGH SCHOOL COACHES BULLETIN

1. The Mt. SAC Invitational, CIF Prelims and CIF Finals will be held at Mt. SAC in 2014.  The Hilmer Lodge Stadium Construction should not impact that in anyway.

2. The time block for the Saturday High School Day Division I /  II Sweeps races will be 8:00 am to 9:30 am.

3. Any Division II school that has a Varsity team accepted into a Sweeps race will be allowed to enter their entire team into the Division I races if the coach chooses. (JV, Soph and Frosh races)

4. A few years ago, Runners World described us as the ‘largest Cross Country meet on the planet”!  They were correct, we are the biggest and we like to think the best as well.  But being the biggest does present some issues that we need to address.  Our total numbers may be limiting the positive experience so many have enjoyed for 66 years now.  So in 2014 the following size reduction measures will go into effect

DIVISION RUNNER EXPLANATION
Varsity Top 7 runners regardless of grade level
J.V. National Championships #8 to #14 runners, regardless of grade, for those schools with Varsity Teams that qualify for a SweepstakesRace.
Junior Varsity Top ten Junior and Seniors not on a Varsity or J.V. National Championship Team (if your team qualifies).
Sophomore Top 10 Sophomores per gender only
Freshman Top 10 Freshman per gender only

5.  The Safety Gate will once again be used this year.  Be aware of the cut off times listed below and do not bring those  athletes who lack sufficient fitness to cover the course at or below our minimum standard.  Please note that this event is an Invitational.  When you enter your athlete, you are certifying to us that they are fit enough to meet our minimum standard for entrance and fit enough to run the Mt. SAC Cross Country Course. If, on meet day, an athlete is struggling, we reserve the right to remove that athlete from the course for their own safety and the safety of others.

This will hopefully solve some of the issues at the start! The start of the races is always so crowded. I also heard the timing is going to be done with a different company that uses ipico chips instead of some home made solution.

This effectively caps teams at 37 per gender - 44 if they qualify for a Sweepstakes race. But that assumes an even distribution of athletes to fill out the Fr and So races.

I'm sure this will be disappointing to many, but it seems a reasonable measure to address the growth challenges meet management must be facing.

Now about those timing chips...
